About The Old School Bamburgh

A short history lesson

Saint Aidan’s School was built in 1877, funded by the church. The original school comprised, the large front (North East) hall (now house number 1), a middle hall (now house number 2), and the South West hall (now house number 3). There was a separate outside toilet block situated to the West side of the South West  hall.

During the Second World War, evacuees from Newcastle were sent to Bamburgh, and a single storey kitchen was added, to cater for extra numbers.

The school educated children from Bamburgh and the surrounding areas for 104 years, numbers dwindled, and eventually in 1981, St Aidans School bade farewell to its last students (9 in total and 6 staff!). The school was bought by the present owners, and converted into 3 guest houses. Original features have been retained throughout (including the school yard!).

Location

The Old School is located centrally within picturesque Bamburgh village, with its fine selection of pubs and places to eat, literally on the doorstep. A short walk of 200 yards takes you to the village green and cricket pitch, nestling within the huge whinstone outcrop that supports the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. Another 200 yards (up the hill mind!), and you are at the gates of the Castle.

The beach at Bamburgh is one of the best anywhere, with miles of unspoilt sand, rock pools, and dunes, all just a 5 minute walk from the school.

For the golfers, we are less than a mile from Bamburgh Castle Golf Club, often referred to as one of the most picturesque courses in the country.

Further a field, the busy harbour town of Seahouses is 4 miles by road; Lindisfarne/Holy Island is 16 miles, as is the historic town of Alnwick, with its magnificent Castle, Gardens, and Tree house!

The border town of Berwick upon Tweed is 20 miles, Cragside House and Rothbury 30 miles.

A most enjoyable week full of sun, sea and surf. The house is a great place to stay - in the heart of the village - yet so peaceful and quiet, even when the tourists are out in full force.
